However, she had also begun wondering if she really needed to put her trust in a stranger. If so, would said stranger actually follow through appropriately? Kelli wanted to trust Katherine. Thoughts of gaining a coach to walk with her through struggles held definite appeal, but self-preservation and independence were two stalwarts she had become fond of over the past few years.
Life had taken several twists she had not anticipated, leading her to trust only in herself and her family. Boyfriends had never panned out. Friends were fickle. Colleagues were ultimately selfish. Time and time again, life had proven one thing to Kelli: the only person she could count on was herself.
Last week Katherine had caught her with one foot off the merry-go-round. Kelli had let her guard down and exposed her inner self to a stranger, and here she is returning for more? This will not happen twice!
Besides, what’s to say this lady will even be here or remember me? Okay, one cup of coffee, maybe a light breakfast, and then it’s off to . . .
“Kelli!” Katherine exclaimed with genuine enthusiasm and a mouthful of what could only be a blueberry scone.
“I should have just stayed home,” Kelli thought. “New plan: fake busy and never cross this threshold again.”
“I was hoping you’d make it in today. I need your advice on a legal matter.”
This was exactly why Kelli had built these defenses. People always wanted something for free. People always wanted to use her for something.
“Could I be sued for creating the most amazing scone on the planet? The divinity of these tasty pastries may create an addiction to rival the nastiest of the narcotics realm.”
“Hmmmmmm … As of now, you are in danger. I see no disclaimer posted, nor was I warned of the addictive properties of said pastry upon ordering it during my last visit. If you would like to avoid future litigation, contact my secretary to set up an appointment.”
This woman was good. Within seconds, yet again, Kelli found herself disarmed, defenses down, bridge laid across the moat. Plan B scratched. On to plan C: proceed with surface issues only!

Clarity over Coffee is a fun, lighthearted story with a deep message. At age thirty-one, Kelli is frazzled and frustrated over where she is in her life and where she needs to be. While visiting Kat’s Kafe, she quickly bonds with a warm and wise Katherine, who challenges her with insightful questions. Kelli reluctantly accepts and embarks on an amazing discovery. About the Author
Authors Jake Knight grew up as the son of Jerry, a lawyer, and the coauthor of this very text, Jane, in Decatur, Alabama. He earned his bachelor’s degree in journalism with a minor in criminology from Auburn University and his master’s degree in secondary education from the University of Alabama, Birmingham. Jake is currently teaching and coaching in a Birmingham area high school. He resides with his beautiful wife, Marie, and their adorable poodle, Ollie, in Homewood, Alabama. Dr. Jane Knight is a leadership coach. She holds an associate certified coach credential from the International Coach Federation and a PhD from Auburn University. Having navigated a robust and varied career path serving in corporate, education, and nonprofit venues, she now follows a calling to “accompany authentic growth and divine engagement in her circles of influence.” Jane is the proud mom of the coauthor of this book, Jake, and resides in Decatur, Alabama, with her husband and best friend, Jerry. Illustrator Before Jennifer Fowler illustrated this story, her passion for art manifested itself only in her personal world. She has been blessing those close to her by drawing and painting all her life. She earned a degree in justice studies from Athens State University and served as grand jury coordinator for the Morgan County District Attorney. Currently, she is quite happy to be a part-time illustrator, a stay-at-home mom to Bella, and a wife to Nathan.
