The God Nobody Knows

“How could his disciples spend three years with him, day in and day out, and NOT GET IT?

I often wonder where I would have fit into the scheme of things had I been alive then, if I had been one of his contemporaries. Would I have been one of the many who followed him from town to town? Would I have poured out my bottle of precious fragrance to bathe his feet? Would I have sat at his feet hungering for words that fed my soul? Would I have risked touching the hem of his garment for healing?

Or would I have shaken my head in wonder, questioning who this was to stir up the status quo? Would I have questioned his right to challenge all the sacred teachings of my religious heritage? Would I have shaken my head in disgust at those who sat at his feet, mesmerized by his words? Would I have chided them for foolishly wasting time all the while complaining because I was stuck with all the work? Would I have nodded my head in agreement with those who criticized and condemned him as a rabble rouser? Would I have called him a heretic? Would I have been outraged when he plowed through the Temple overturning tables, scattering livestock and coins all over the place? I wonder.

Or—and I hesitate to even think about this possibility. Would I have even noticed he existed? Would I have been so busy tending to my own affairs that I would have been oblivious to the fact that anything at all was happening? Would I have been so caught up in my own little world that I would not have even ventured out into the larger world? Who can say? Perhaps asking these questions can make me more sensitive to what’s happening here and now.” (They Saw What Jesus Saw)
