I am not alone...Life's Journey

I boarded the plane headed to Fort Meyers. It was an unknown to me, but it would be a fresh start. I arrived at the airport. I have mixed feelings now about how I felt then. I was excited, but I was a little afraid. The plane landed and I stepped into my anticipation of a new beginning in an 800-square foot apartment. Being on the second floor provided a necessary sense of security. Once I got settled, I called my family to let them know that I had arrived safely and I gave Miles a call to let him know the same. I found my way to the grocery store and got a few little groceries without a car. My car was still loaded on the truck with my furniture and all of my personal items. I had a suitcase and a couple of necessary items. I was told that the truck with all of my belongings would arrive the next day. That night when I prepared to go to bed, the realization came to me. I was alone. I was by myself. I had no physical protection and no one to talk to, no familiar neighbors, no Mom or Dad, brothers or sister or friends. At about 11 o'clock at night, I received a phone call from one of the movers. He told me that they had arrived and that they would bring my things to my apartment in the morning. I told him, "Thank you," and that I was "looking forward to getting my things the next day." Approximately thirty minutes after the initial call, I received a call back from the same gentleman. I was rather startled and didn't know why this was happening. The man asked me if I would like to go out and get something to eat. That really scared me. I began to think about women who had ventured out on their own, moving across the country to pursue personal goals and later found themselves in a bad predicament. I thought, Oh my goodness, Lord, give me words right now. Help me think of something to say. After a few seconds of silence, I declined the offer and told him that I was expecting company. He seemed to be a little turned off and hung up. I did not call my family to tell them about what happened, but I did call Miles. He and I talked on the phone through most of the night as I was afraid. That person knew where I lived and knew I was there alone. By taking a close look at some of the things loaded on to the truck he could probably determine that I was a single woman. When they packed my things they saw one bike, one television and many other one-item things. He knew that I was a single woman moving to a foreign land. I slept uncomfortably through the wee hours of the night. I had no protection at all the next morning when the two truck drivers arrived with my belongings. It was easy to tell that the driver who had called me was a little put off that I didn't have dinner with him that night. There were very few words spoken. They unloaded my things and had me to sign the paperwork and I said, "Thank you," and they said, "You're welcome." For the next two weeks, I remained frightened.
