One of the objections to this teaching is that in Christ, we have a new nature. And this is true. Romans 6 states the doctrine of the new birth fairly completely. But it also contains vs 16: “Do you not know that if you continually surrender yourselves to anyone (old, carnal nature or new nature) to do his will, you are the slaves of him whom you obey, whether that be to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience which leads to righteousness (right doing and right standing with God)? (AMP; author emphasis added).
Certainly your new nature isn’t continually involved in obeying the old sin nature, but all of us are dealing with the old nature at some place, some time on earth, post salvation. So it must be the old nature trying to revive. If we want to live in freedom as sons of God, we must pursue the revelation in the Word about developing and living from the new nature. Without doing so, we will, by default, continue to live from the old nature.
“But I say, walk and live [habitually] in the [Holy} Spirit [responsive to and controlled and guided by the Spirit]; then you will certainly not gratify the cravings and desires of the flesh (of human nature without God). For the desires of the flesh are opposed to the [Holy] Spirit, and the [desires of the] Spirit are opposed to the flesh (godless human nature); for these are antagonistic to each other [continually withstanding and in conflict with each other], so that you are not free but are prevented from doing what you desire to do.” (Galatians 5: 16-17 AMP)
