Belle climbed onto her pony and followed her brother out of town on the trail of the robbers. "So much has happened I can't believe we just got out of school last week!"
"You said it." Sixteen-year-old Gentry nodded in agreement. "We didn't expect our summer to begin with a bank robbery. I figured today's party would be the most excitement we'd have until the church social!" He looked at his sister. "I wish you'd go on to the party--no use both of us missing it. Besides, Ma and Pa wouldn't want you to come with me."
Belle looked shocked. "I can't let you go alone! I may be a year younger than you--"
"But what can you do? You don't even carry a gun."
She stared at him, incredulous. "We're not expecting a shootout! We'll just find out where their hideout is, and tell the sheriff."
"It's still dangerous, sis. I'd rather you went back. What if you got hurt, or worse?"
Belle lifted her chin. "I'm not going back."
Gentry sighed. He knew there wasn't much use arguing.

Born in the mountains of West Virginia, Ann Kemp and her husband had the privilege of living many years in the Western United States, which has been the inspiration for years of writing. She is a young-at-heart wife, mother of four grown children, eight grandchildren and three great-grands.
