The spirit, the element …
My Spirit Is the Fire
My body is the element;
My spirit is the fire.
My soul’s the member in between
That merges heart’s desire.
Spirit coincides with mind,
The soul, imagination,
And body with the manifest
The end of God’s creation.
Faith, substance, body are as one;
Imagination, hope, and soul;
Love, mind, and Spirit, unison
Can only wisdom’s eye behold.
So my body’s element combines
To be my spirit’s fire,
And soul’s imagination will
Take my being always higher.

What makes flowers grow?

What makes strength appear in man?
What removes man from his past?

Or did with air the earth surround?
Who provided life a place to stay?

What gives man a mind to pray?
What redemptive force relieves his fear?
What causes birds to sing?
What makes flowers grow?
Had I the answer to these things,
Then all secret things on earth I’d know.

One Smile
One smile among the frozen faces,
one smile that seemed so obsolete.
One smile against the desert places
of drought and hunger, of love deplete.
One smile that brave and boldly challenged
the others who did coldly stare.
One smile through all did remain balanced,
and of its warmth did freely share.
One smile did as an island stand
against the selfish hearts of men.
One smile but led of love’s command
did teach the world to smile again.

Though I had not much to offer …
I Fed the Hungry for a Day
I fed the hungry for a day and did a sincere love portray.
I gave them meat and bread and such:
through food I taught them God’s love much.
Can I enjoy a well-cooked meal
with my neighbor starved and chilled and ill?
To impart the godly master plan,
God needs hearts and bread-filled hands.
And why do you, my friend, stand by
while with hunger the children cry?
We need a portion of your pay to feed the hungry for a day.
Can I partake of a goodly pot
while my neighbor partakes of it not?
And satisfy my appetite
while many a soul goes to bed hungry at night?
I ask you please, again I say,
would you feed the hungry for a day?
Some eat out of garbage cans,
their silent cries make no demands.
Their tears are sheltered far from view,
but their cries echo deep inside of you.
It’s time to get busy, and make no delay,
to feed the hungry for a day.
Clothe and shelter, show kindness, too,
as godly love has oft showed you.
Seek those in need, extend your hand,
help heal, uplift your fellow man!
It’s not so hard, I hope, I pray, to feed the hungry for a day.
And you’ll be blessed; I won’t deny
that you’ve dried the tears from some tear-filled eyes,
and you’ve filled with bread some hungry soul
From your heart within that once waxed cold.
And you followed Jesus and his blessed way,
and you fed the hungry for a day!

About the Book
Words are written to mold, make and re-shape the reader. There is a basic blueprint to one’s soul designed by his Maker. Things sympathetic to the soul’s blueprint tend to disturb and excite centers of awareness in the reader. It is for this reason that when an extraordinary “gift” is on public display countless souls will beat a path to its door. The singer’s voice, an athlete’s physical prowess in action on the playing field, the stroke of an artist’s brush upon the canvass, and yes, also words on parchment. The audience “draws” from the gift of words 'something' that excites and revitalizes their inner being. Words that transcend the ordinary plateau of a man’s thoughts elevate his being. Philadelphia Proverbs may accomplish just that.
About the Author
In the 1980’s the author’s poetry was repeatedly featured in a major Philadelphia newspaper’s “Poetry Corner”. Several short articles of his, dealing with various political issues of the time were also featured there. In 1989 four of his poems were included in the “American Poetry Anthology” volume IX, Number 4, published by Robert Nelson. In the mid 2000’s back-to-back editions of “The International Who’s Who In Poetry”, Howard Ely Editor, featured two of the author’s works. Out of the two-hundred poetry selections appearing in each of the editions, both of the author’s poems, one appearing the one year and the other the next, were chosen to be the first poem featured on page number one in each edition.
Born in Philadelphia Pennsylvania and raised by christian grandparents, as a small child the author was very curious-minded. Heavily influenced by his christian up-bringing the author often delved, even at a young age, into his grandfather’s small library of books on christian subject matter. He often sat before his grandfather, the pastor of a small church, absorbing the many sermons and subject matter poured out from his grandfather’s pulpit. After completing high school, he attended college, but after a few years quit abruptly. There was a deep-seated hunger for the answer to questions on religion and God that had plagued him all his life. At this stage in his life he was convinced of two things: That there was a God who controlled all things, and that there was a path to God accessible to all men. He believed that if a man would sincerely seek he would find a performance of the miraculous works Jesus promised with his words, “… the works that I do, shall he do also; …” John 14:12 kjv. Philadelphia Proverbs is a summation of the author’s search for the God he always knew to be real.
