God has given us a record of the event that happened as the Israelites went into the promised land. It was far more than an illusion. The sun and the moon stopped their movement across the sky. A great shower of meteors rained upon the earth, killing more people than Joshua's army killed. We can turn to the third chapter of Habakuk, to which I have earlier referred, and get a picture of the violence that accompanied this incident. These events had a very dramatic and forceful effect upon the earth, and left remaining evidence behind. As mountains were scattered, as the countries were forced apart, as the hills moved like ripples across the sea, as the rivers changed thier courses, and new ones were formed; these things were not like dreams that came and went. When the people woke to a new day, the earth bore evidence of those things that had happened the previous day. We might examine a globe and wonder about Australia's peculiar place off to itself and wonder why it is so placed. According to God's record left by Habakkuk, just such things happened when the sun stood still. We might ask Antarctica, Australia, or the various parts of the world: "what are you doing here"? The answer, though it might be otherwise unspoken, comes to us from the Bible. The earth bears evidence of these things that God has done; and we might say without fail that He does them through His ordinances.
Regardless of what was involved when the sun and the moon stood still, they did stand still, even if it defies all reason. I feel assured that it does not defy all reason. The primary problem is in accepting this event as having actually happened. Many people accept this event from a fairytale view; however, is it accepted with the entire scientific ramifications involved in the event of the sun and the moon actually standing still?
The time of this incident was about 3440 years ago, about 900 years after the flood. The earth had risen from the flood waters and had broken apart, forming various continents; there had been the rise of great mountains, and the scattering of landmasses into various parts of the world....
Let us realize that Biblical accounts are not myths, nor are they only religious stories. the Bible does not degrade itself to such levels to put across its truths. It would be more profitable for us to consider what was involved in these accounts, what brought these events to pass. I refer again to the third chapter of Habakkuk, where we find happenings that we could expect to accompany such an event. By this report, we can see that the event with the sun and the moon was more than an illusion; it had what could be called a solid scientific background of events accompanying it. We need to realize that we are considering events that left a geological record upon the earth. As I have already stated, I believe that the standing still of the sun and moon was involved the formation of salt domes. They are a part of that geological record that was left.
The great showers of meteors, indicated that event including the standing still of the sun and moon, involved another heavenly body, possibly a comet. No power within the earth itself would have caused the meteor shower, nor could have any power within the earth caused the sun and the moon to stand still. In fact, every activity of the earth would have resisted and did resist. It was the power...
