“Everyone talks about you, Rudy. All the women that is.” He just grunted and executed another turn I wasn’t prepared for.
“That right there.”
“That right where?”
“Your talking about…about courting rituals in mixed company. That right there is what makes you stand out no matter what trimmings are used to dress you up on the outside,” he said eyeing me critically.
I glanced down at myself too. I was wearing a light blue silk dress that was quickly becoming one of my favorite dinner dresses. Than I thought about what he said.
“What are you talking about?”
“You will never fit in talking like that,” he hissed.
“As if you care! As if I care what you care!”
He just narrowed his eyes and swayed with me for a bit. It was the angriest dancing I had ever done in my life. “And I am supposed to believe that you do not have your hat in the ring?”
“In what ring?” I stopped again. He threw his arms up in frustration.
“That is it. I am going to bed.”
“I have no desire to marry you Rudy Addison. You’re not at all what I want in a husband.”
“Well you are not at all what I want in a wife,” he said lifting the needle from the record, causing it to end the sound abruptly.
“Good. I’m glad we got that cleared up,” I said through clenched teeth, unsure exactly why I was so angry. Probably because he was rude. How dare he say I wouldn’t fit in?
“Great,” he said because he just had to get the last word. I just walked out of the parlor and stomped up the stairs to my bedroom. I had wasted a perfectly good evening. I had learned nothing more about the waltz.
