There were no buildings on this rental property: no garage, utility shed, or barn. The doors to the truck were locked. I had briefly considered breaking a window, but I knew this would rocket the situation beyond conceivable limitation. The only possible refuge involved a space that was shared by our two hunting hounds. They slept on old, matted-down rugs and were protected from the elements by a brown canvas that had been attached to the house siding and staked with long poles which stretched towards the yard. This provided a shielded area about four feet long and four feet wide. With dripping hair and shivering lips, I crawled with resignation under that shelter and crouched with those welcoming animals, and wrapped myself close to their fur. Bruises were forming on my cheeks and arms, and the blood from my nose dripped on my naked chest. That night, from beneath the tarp, I experienced the depth of my despair, and I wondered how life had become so hopeless.

From Beneath the Tarp is a true story of one woman’s journey through the realities of domestic violence. Although an innocent childhood supplanted a healthy self-esteem, the betrayal of a traumatic marriage launched her into a world she never knew existed. The cycle of violence is detailed in this story of courage and renewal. May God receive the glory for this woman’s transformation, healing and redemption. In the end, this is a story about hope, and hope never disappoints.
About the Author
Susan Perry resides in northern Wisconsin where she raised her five children. She has been a registered nurse for forty-four years and specialized in obstetrics much of her career. Currently she teaches nursing at a college level. Due to her survivor status related to domestic violence, she has presented her story and the facts of abuse to varying groups of health providers, law enforcement agencies, advocates, and students. She now feels compelled to share her story in print, to hopefully provide awareness of this devastating social concern and to give encouragement to other victims of abuse.
