The most direct definition and explanation of eternal life is found in John 17. In the words of Jesus, He outlines the basics of eternal life. It is found in knowing God and His Son Jesus Christ.
Jesus said: This is eternal life: that they may know You, the only true God, and the One You have sent- Jesus Christ. V3
We do not know the exact setting or circumstance of Jesus’ prayer which includes these words. Prior to this, Jesus was instructing His disciples regarding the arrival and ministry of the Holy Spirit and His departure that would precede it. After He taught these things to the disciples, He looked up to Heaven in preparation for prayer. This was a common posture for prayer, to look up, toward the throne of God in Heaven.
In what follows, we are given a glimpse of the fellowship that has existed between God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit since eternity past. The veil is pulled back for a moment, as Jesus prays to the Father; first for Himself, then on behalf of His disciples, then for all who would believe down through the ages.
