Charlie found it hard to focus on the drive back to the hotel. Although he didn’t want to dampen the fun they’d had, he wondered if he should mention his concerns. He couldn’t shake the feeling that they needed to talk.
“What are you thinking about? You look so severe.” Katie asked, watching his face.
Charlie smiled, “You’re starting to be able to read me, aren’t you?”
Katie nodded and reached out to stroke his cheek. “Is everything okay? You had fun, didn’t you?”
“Absolutely.”
“So what is it? I can tell something’s bothering you.”
“It’s not that I’m bothered so much as I’m curious about something.”
“And what are you curious about, Dr. Warren?”
“Will you promise to be open with me if I ask?”
“I promise.”
Charlie took a breath and proceeded. “Have you and Josh ever dated?”
“What? No!”
“Well, I’m not sure if you realize this, but he’s got a thing for you.”
“You can’t be serious. We’ve been friends for years.”
“He may just be a friend to you, but trust me, you are not just a friend to him.” Katie turned to stare at the road ahead. When she looked back at him, he nodded.
“I’m a man; I know what I see.”
“What did you see exactly?”
“First of all, he stares at you constantly. He could hardly stand it when I touched you. In fact, he didn’t like my hands anywhere near you. Then when I kissed you he practically fell over. I’ve been around the field a time or two and I can tell when a man is interested in a woman. Josh couldn’t take his eyes off of you, and all he wanted was to talk to you. He has feelings for you. I’m sure of it.”
“I don’t know what to say.” Katie looked at him desperately. “What do you want me to do?” “I don’t know. Just be aware, I guess.”
“You’re not upset about this, are you?” Katie asked uneasily.
“Not exactly. It’s just that I know how I feel about you. I’ve told you that I love you, but you haven’t said those words to me. I don’t want to go any deeper if you’re not in this with me. I want…no, I need for you to be sure that you don’t have feelings for Josh.”
“Are you joking?”
“No, actually I’m not. In case you haven’t noticed, you drop everything when he calls. You talk about him all the time and you say he’s your best friend. I think my concerns are valid, especially now that I’ve seen his reaction to my touching you.”
“I’ve never thought of Jay as anything but a friend. I don’t even know how to respond.” “You need to search your heart,” he replied. “All I can ask is that you let me know what you find.”

Katie Kaufmann is convinced her life is over. Katie’s boyfriend, Marcus Spencer, has cruelly kicked her out of the house they share, and leaving Colorado to move back into her family’s farmhouse feels like the epitome of failure. However, when she’s seated next to Dr. Charlie Warren on the flight home, life back in small-town Texas begins to not look so bad.
As this new relationship blossoms, Katie’s heart also turns back to the Lord. Yet even with the many positive changes, she can’t understand why she continues to make mistakes. Why is it so hard to live out the Christian faith? And why does it bother everyone that she looks to her best friend, Josh McConnelly, for encouragement? As Katie wrestles with these questions she realizes that she must take an honest look at her life and her choices if she’s going to find her way to forever.
About the Author
Born and raised in Dallas, TX, it was Laurie Macafee’s dream to one day write a novel. After graduating from Highland Park High School, Laurie went on to the University of Oklahoma where she wrote for the campus newspaper and was often seen journaling for fun. Following college, Laurie worked on the youth staff at Highland Park Presbyterian Church where she acquired a passion for teens, and even more so for the cause of purity. Wanting to address the current pressures and trends in our society, Laurie strove to write an honest, authentic look at modern-day romance. Finding Forever is Laurie’s first endeavor into fiction and her favorite challenge thus far.
Laurie lives in Boerne, TX with her Northern Irish-born husband, two young boys, and one very spoiled cat. Laurie enjoys reading, movie-watching, and cheering for her boys from countless baseball stands and soccer fields.
