Suddenly Nolan heard a strange noise below him. His heart started racing! He heard a strange moan and he felt scared. “God, I know you can hear me. I’m scared.” The bush next to the tree started shaking. Nolan looked down and saw a black nose poking out of the bush. Nolan climbed down from the tree. “Doggie, you scared me.” The dog didn’t move. “Are you hungry? Here, eat one of my turkey jerky sticks.” He pulled out a piece of jerky from his shirt pocket. Nolan leaned over and placed it near the dog. He noticed she only had one eye. Just like a pirate, he thought. “Have another piece of jerky. Gracie, says food always makes her feel better. She is my twin sister.” The dog slowly limped towards Nolan. “You hurt your paw! What happened to you? I can’t leave you here alone. Hey, my dad will know what to do. He is the smartest dad in the world.”

Gayle Baker was raised in southern Texas. She contributes her love for Christ, family, and anything with four legs, to her parents. Harnessing her passion for teaching children and rescuing strays, she wrote this children’s book about Darla, the one-eyed, feral dog she rescued in 2007.
