What do a duffel bag, a pocket watch, a snapshot, and a lace handkerchief have in common? In Signposts to Victory all four are finds that lead to unexpected revelations, spinning the characters’ lives in cycles from disbelief to needed resolutions.
The first discovery, made by three women, was a large, green duffel bag, setting the stage for the rest of the novel:
The kitchen, located at the back right corner of the house, was massive even by 1800’s standards.
Inside, they began to open one cabinet door after another in hopes of discovering some hidden treasure. Suddenly Amy let out a blood-curdling scream.
“What? What?” Jean ran across the room to the sink where her daughter was standing, holding wide the cabinet doors beneath. “What is that?”
“It’s a huge duffel bag,” Amy said as she reached to pull it out. “At first I thought it was somebody.”
“Don’t, Amy! Don’t you dare try to drag that out. We don’t know what’s in it. It could be anything. It could even be that ‘somebody,’—a dead one.” Jean pulled her daughter back as they stared at a new-looking, green duffel bag in a house that was over a hundred and fifty years old.
“Amy, let me pull it out. I am your mother and I certainly don’t want anything to happen to you.” Wrinkling her nose as if warding off some offensive odor, Jean reached for the nearest strap on the bag and tugged. It did not budge. “My! It’s heavy.” She gave it another pull. Nothing. “What in the world is in this thing?” Her voice became high-pitched with a slight quiver.
“Oh, Mom!” Amy reached around Jean and lifted her mother’s hand. Feeling for the other strap, she began to yank them both with all her strength until she was able to drag the bag out through the open doors.
“Now what?” said Diane, as the bag was thrust onto the worn, yellowed linoleum floor. “I don’t think we should open it. This place smells and that might be a warning of what’s in there. Let’s go.”
Before Diane had uttered the final word, Amy was pulling the zipper across the length of the bag. She pulled back the sides of the duffel to reveal its contents.,
“Oh!” she gasped, her dark eyes bulging. “Would you look at THIS!”

About the Book
Signposts to Victory is composed of four parts. In Part 1, three women set out on what they think will be an uneventful trip to a small southern town. The shocking discovery they make there, however, turns their lives upside-down, placing them in awkward and dangerous positions.
In subsequent parts, a series of unusual finds present unique challenges for other characters, as well. Shrouded in mystery and uncertainty, each surprising revelation calls for a solution, though often accompanied by painful inner struggles.
The question of forgiveness, the overriding theme of the novel, involves a choice each character must make that ultimately determines the path forward—toward either defeat or victory.
About the Author
Peggy Houston Henderson is a former high school teacher who has been published in several magazines. She has four children and twelve grandchildren and likes to travel, read, study the Bible, and, of course, write. She also has a love for all kinds of music, especially the old hymns.
She and her husband of sixty-one years reside in Haslet, Texas, near Ft. Worth.
