GROWING SPIRITUALLY
New believers are called babes in Christ because they are like babies when it comes to spiritual truths. I remember when I gave my life to Christ I felt like I was on cloud nine and thought I would never have any more problems because I was saved. I thought my life would be peaches and cream; it would be smooth sailing, until one morning I awakened and I didn’t feel saved any more. I was faced with negative emotions and other problems. I wondered how I could be saved and feel this way. What had happened to my salvation, did I lose it? Was I still saved? What I learned is that my salvation is not based on my feelings and emotions but faith in God’s Word. I was learning to walk by faith by trusting His Word and not depending on my feelings. Walking by faith in the Word of God is part of your new life and walk in Christ.
I also learned that being saved did not exempt me from problems. Scripture says many are the afflictions of the righteous but God delivers him from them all. When you are facing problems you can rely on and trust God to be with you and to deliver you.
Walking by faith and learning to trust and to rely on God’s Word is part of your spiritual growth. It is God’s desire for you to grow and to mature in spiritual truths about your salvation and your new life in Him. The Bible says as newborn babes in Christ, desire the pure milk of the Word so that you can grow spiritually and mature in your salvation. When a baby is physically born, he is given milk so that he can be nourished and grow physically. The baby’s growth is not seen right away because it starts in the inside but over time as the baby continues to be fed, growth and maturity will happen. This same principle will work for you because the Word of God is your spiritual food. When you are reading the Word of God, applying His Word to your life and talking to Him in prayer, you are feeding your spiritual man and you are growing spiritually. You may not see your growth immediately but spiritual growth is happening. As you continue, you will grow and mature in spiritual truths concerning your salvation and your new life in Jesus Christ.
You may be thinking the Bible is a big book and wondering where will you start reading. You are right! The Bible is a big book. It is a book of books. There are 66 books in the Bible. Most new believers start reading in the book of Saint John in the New Testament; that’s where I started when I gave my life to Christ but there are no set rules as to where to start reading. If you don’t know the names of the books in the Bible or where to find them that’s okay. I didn’t know either when I was a babe in Christ. Remember, you are not alone. The Holy Spirit, who is in you, will guide you and help you to live your new life and walk in this new way. He is your Helper and He will teach you. Don’t be afraid to ask Him for help in any area of your life that concerns you. When you pray, He hears you and He is always with you.
