A ROSE STILL HAS THORNS
This morning I blossomed and I still had thorns
I guess, it’s because of the mist from the storm
The rain drowned my petals with too much to drink
The moisture surrounded like a rich woman’s mink
It lasted for hours, until it finally did cease
The night quickly ended and the sun was released
It melted the rain, deep into my pods
The sun pierced my petals like a lightning rod
The next thing I knew, I could see through to the earth
My eyes cleared God’s tears and the clouds had dispersed
The first thing I thought was, ‘where are my friends?’
They were washed away and all that remained were their stems
Before I could morn, I caught a glimpse of their kids
Buds reaching for the sun’s rays as I once did
At times, I wished that I never did bloom
But, with all the love I see in them, despair has no room
I still can’t forget those who never did spore
That’s why, though I’ve blossomed, I’ll always have thorns.
NATURES CALL
Today, several flowers blossomed.
Even through the rain.
A smile as my umbrella and puddles splashing under my feet,
Made me born again.
I could have sworn it was a sunny day.
Laughing at what once made me shed tears.
And crying about my new beginning.
How did I make it here?
A year ago today, my body was weak and my heart held sorrow.
Today, my life has just begun and I have hope for tomorrow.
I could have sworn I wasn’t going to make it.
Aside from bland expressions of friendships in the past.
On high from the impression that you made on my path.
Because, I remember the insanity.
Sometimes, I would wake up and scream vengeance against my Imaginary demons
Until my voice had no tone.
Oh, but, move on.
Now, in the collision of the rain and the dew, I remember you and I.
I’m above and beyond my destiny
Unbeknownst to me.
I could have sworn I’d never feel this free.
Floating in mother earth’s sea of tranquility.

About the Book
From the Bottom is a compilation of poems that touch the heart and soul. Its theme is one of reflection on greatness within and shows that we all have a divine purpose on this earth according to God’s word. It is especially enlightening regarding overcoming adversity in life no matter what the situation or who you are.
The stone that was rejected by the builders has now become the cornerstone.

About the Author
Tanabahi (Katana) Matthews wrote “FROM THE BOTTOM” as a reflection of her own life and the situations of the lives of those around her. She started writing poetry when she was nine and completed her first book of poems at age 10. “FROM THE BOTTOM” is her first published work. Though life has not been easy for her, she has come to view the world differently. She has the ability, through her poems, to express truthfully what she feels as a way to inspire ,encourage and bring joy to others.
She is also a gifted lyricist who has performed rap and R&B with good reviews throughout the Twin Cities, Hawaii and overseas ; produced a number of CD’s including “Secret Weapon 1 & 2”; through Katastrofik Entertainment, LLC where she is building a name for editing videos and music production. She has two stage performances to her credit including ‘The Devil Didn’t Raise You”. She currently resides in the Twin Cities.
