People often speak of a decision they need to make or a circumstance they’re walking through. I ask them, “Have you prayed about it?”
Their answer of course is yes.
“I’ve been praying about this decision and I just don’t know what to do,” they say.
“How are you praying?” I ask.
“What do you mean?”
“How are you praying about this decision? How long have you been praying about this decision? How are you seeking God in this matter?”
I’m not trying to be difficult. I have just found that when we often say we’re praying about something, we’re not really praying. We’re not getting alone, talking and listening to what God might have to say. We’re not reading the Bible, seeking a word from God.
We want to drive up, roll down the windows and tell Him what we want.
Shout our order into the speaker.
Pay at the next window.
Take the order to go.
We want a drive-thru Jesus.
I don’t think there is anything wrong with a little fast food. My credit card receipts will back it up. And there is certainly nothing wrong with praying in the car on the way to work, or talking to God in the shower. I’ve learned to talk to God and look for God in almost everything I am doing. It’s healthy. It’s biblical.
But if you really want to know God more intimately, if you want a deeper relationship with Him, it’s not going to happen at the drive thru.
You have to be still; to look; to listen. You will need to pull up a chair and see what God the Master Chef is preparing. He is taking everything – the good, the bad and the ugly – and blending it all together for good.
I realize upon reflection, this is what God has always been about. He has been using everything in my life, to shape me more and more into His image. He is using His Word, different people, time in prayer and many of my experiences to prepare me for Him; to prepare me for His purposes. And He will continue to do so.
He is doing the same for you. That is who He is. That is what He does.
I am inviting you to pull up a chair and look over God’s menu together with me. Let’s see what God is serving up in our lives.

Drive-Thru Jesus communicates that God calls each of us to a lifelong journey with the Savior. He is not a drive-thru Jesus. He isn’t looking for you simply to pray a prayer so you can claim membership in His club. He wants to walk with you, and He wants you to walk with Him.
