January 2 All my longings lie open before you, O Lord; my sighing is not hidden from you (Psalm 38:9). How do you respond when someone asks you, “How are you doing?” If you are like most of us, you respond, “Fine.” We may be dealing with marital conflict, financial setback, and physical pain, but we still say, “Fine.” We often play similar games with God. Our prayers are formal and superficial. The difference is that God knows better. He knows our deepest longings. One of David’s greatest strengths was that he was honest with God. He understood that God knew the depth of his soul, so he talked openly to God about his deepest feelings. David spilled out his doubts and complaints and fears and sins to God. God knows your deepest longings today—both good and bad. He understands your sighs. You will not make much progress in your spiritual life until you learn to be honest with God in your prayers. Your fresh start in life depends on a frank, honest dialogue with God about your deepest feelings and problems.
