Greetings, if you are reading this little book, chances are you have a bi-polar
disorder or know someone who does. It may even be a family member.
I am 63 years old now and had my first bi-polar episode in 1972. I was in Vietnam
in the infantry and had no idea what was transpiring at the time. Three years later I ended
up in a mental institution and 3 years after that another mental institution. In 1978, I was
diagnosed, by a German Doctor, with Bi-polar disorder. At present, I have been
dealing with this disorder for about 40 years.
As you read this, please keep in mind, I am not a Doctor. This entire book is from a
patient's point of view. I wish I had all the answers and a cure, but I don't!
My purpose for writing this is many fold, but can be summed up in 4 or 5 basic reasons.
During the course of my disorder, I have been in a mental hospital 12 times (and counting).
My heart goes out to anyone with bi-polar disorder and my hope is that this little book
can help.
I have also learned that bi-polar is not just an individual disorder. It is a family
disorder that affects not only close family members, although it usually affects them
the most, it affects everyone the individual comes in contact with.
It is my hope and purpose that this book helps these individuals have a better
understanding of bi-polar disorder.
Purpose is something we all need in our lives. Sometimes people with bi-polar illness
lose this vision. But now I believe that with proper medication and a good psychiatrist, bi-polar
individuals can live a happy functioning life. I also believe that having a healthy
spiritual foundation is very important. When we have Jesus and His God in our lives,
it gives the bi-polar individual a force within to talk to and reason things over with.
Most of the people I know that have passed through the dark ages, so to speak, have some
kind of spiritual foundation in their lives. This helps them function on a more even keal.
As I end this chapter, it is my hope and prayer that all people with bi-polar disorder
can and will become happy, healthy functioning individuals.
