The Jonah Sign

The account of the prophet Jonah deserves a proper reading-especially in the light of Biblical History but also in light of the current Middle East conflict. On July 2014, the tomb and monument to Jonah in Mosul Iraq, along with several other historical sites, were destroyed by the Islamic extremist group ISIL. Why?

Jonah the reluctant prophet is called to show mercy to the undeserving city of Nineveh which was the capital of Assyria. A nation that could have easily outmatched an episode in the Game of Thrones series! Jonah flees in understandable dread and indignation at such a mission but soon learns, fleeing from the presence of the sovereign God of the universe is not such a good idea. The more dramatic parts of the Jonah account that for some make it appear more like a nice kindergarten story rather than actual fact have been given careful research. Seasoned seamen and a whale commanded to ‘vomit!” are a sober reminder, obedience is imperative in the order of God’s predetermined plan.

Each chapter places us into this storm of events revealing similar conflicts that also separate us from the presence of God. Jonah’s inner conflicts combined with the compassionate heart of a patient God are woven through this book making it suitable for personal reading or Bible Study groups.

Most of us have unanswered questions but some questions need to be allowed to unfold in their own time.

This fine thread of faith throughout the book leads us into the presence of Jesus Christ who gives Jonah the favoured rap he deserves. He warns the religious leaders of His day that the people of Nineveh who repented at Jonah’s preaching, would rise up in judgement this generation if they did not likewise repent of their unbelief. Not a popular message! Behind it is the compassionate heart of God not willing that any should perish.

The bible is more up to date than today’s news byte and the sign of Jonah more relevant than ever. It demands a verdict and gives hope in the midst of despair.
