Just as God had promised Abraham, He gave the Israelite people favor in the eyes of the Egyptians and they left Egypt with articles of silver, gold, and clothing. What other slaves have ever been gifted by their captors then told to please get lost? This is one of those awesome passages (of which there are hundreds) where we see how faithful God is to His Word. What He says He will do we can trust Him to do completely. The total descendants of Abraham that entered the nation of Egypt in the time of Joseph totaled 70 people (Genesis 46:27), however, they left the land hundreds of years later "600,000 soldiers on foot, besides their families" totally possibly a million people (Exodus 12:37). Here is another promise made to Abraham that God was faithful to keep. Before Abraham had any children, God said to him "Look now toward heaven and count the stars if you are able to number them . . . so shall your descendants be . . . " (Genesis 15:5). He promised to make him a great nation and here we see Israel's beginning. They would no longer simply be the descendants of Abraham but the people of God and the nation of Israel. Four generations in Egypt and then the people would be released to the land deeded to Abraham. God's deliverance is the theme of the Passover feast. It represents God's love and faithfulness to the people He had chosen, not because they deserved it. No, it was all a matter of God's grace and mercy. On the original Passover day, God passed through Egypt at midnight and took the life of the firstborn of each family and animal where the blood of the sacrificial lamb had not been applied to their home. With this final plague, God released His people from the bondage of Egypt and they exited their bondage to enter His Promised Land. Just like the Israelites, we have been released from the bondage of sin if we have been saved by the blood of the true Passover Lamb. ". . . For indeed Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed for us" (1 Corinthians 5:7b).
