As we neared the end of our journey to Liberia having almost lost our toddler to high fever, I said, "If I ever get off this ship onto dry land again, I will never board another." Famous last words I'm afraid!
But I wasn't out of the woods yet! When our ship came near the port of Monrovia, we heard that all the berths were filled and we had no place to dock. Orders were received for our ship, the African Glade, to drop anchor out in the breakwater and a tugboat would come to take all of us to shore. Remember this was a converted war ship with a 30-foot high deck. I have a fear of heights and when I peered down to see this little tug bobbing in the water below my heart quaked with fear.
Now the gangplank was just a narrow set of boards attached to rope. This contraption would give or move every time you held onto it. Eventually my husband and the crew took Craig, Jim and my shoes down into the tug. But there I stood, barefoot and praying for courage to start down the 30 feet of loose, unsteady gangplank. I could have managed if there had been something sturdy to hold onto. But no, the rope gave way every time I took a step.
I really don't remember how I got down off that ship. I believe God sent angels to help me. When the tugboat reached the dock area, a group from Radio ELWA was there to welcome us and take us the twelve miles down the coast where we would live and work the next six years.

About the Book
My Liberian Memoirs presents stories that are meant to act as a testimony of how God led one woman, Kathy, and her husband, Tom, to Liberia where He proceeded to help them through some of the most difficult years of their lives. Without God’s help and reassurance that Liberia was where they should be, the couple undoubtedly would have packed their bags and boarded the next plane home.
About the Author
Born in 1926, Katharina R. Lowe (Kathy) spent her early years on a farm. Since she was in the third grade, Kathy always wanted to be a nurse. After high school, she completed her nursing training at Hahnemann Medical College and Hospital School of Nursing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Her career has included geriatric and psychiatric nursing and support group facilitation.
Kathy completed a bachelor of arts degree at Eckerd College later in life. My Liberian Memoirs was first developed as Kathy attended community writing classes.
Retired, Kathy currently lives in Seminole, Florida. She is a mother of four and was married to her late husband, Tom, for sixty years.
