For most of human history, the lion has been regarded as the King of the Jungle; the mightiest among beasts. Majestic, strong, courageous, thunderous and powerful are all words that have been used over the years to paint a picture of creation’s regard for the lion. Of all of the animals and creatures of the world, the lion is the last one to need defending. It rules over its territory with the utmost confidence; roaring in rebuttal to anyone who challenges his rule.
Just as the adjectives used to describe the majesty and power of the lion, the comparisons between a lion and God (or His Word) have been many. From metaphors in the book of Hosea to the beloved Aslan in the Chronicles of Narnia, God is often portrayed as the mighty maned beast. Yet, while that metaphor may have been widely understood by Christendom-past, it seems to have been forgotten by Christendom-present. This can be seen in no clearer display than much of the modern church’s approach to science and secular culture. Science, evidence, pluralism, secularism, naturalism, and atheism: these words have become cursed ones in the church. These words seem to strike fear in the hearts of many Christians. To so many Christians, it’s almost as if in there is this deep seated fear that science, evidence, pluralism, secularism, and atheism will overtake and ultimately slay the claims Christianity is founded on. It’s seems as if much of Western Christendom is horrified that God and His holy Bible won’t make it out alive from the attacks of secularism. As our modern mass media and culture continue to give the general public the impression that the giant that once was Christianity is slowly dying, it seems as if Christians have forgotten the once widely held notion that God is like a powerful lion. It seems that in today’s world, in a foolish attempt to “protect the lion”; we have chained up God and His Word, forgetting entirely that the two can fight for themselves.
Rather than keep God shackled up, it’s time we let the Bible and its Author loose to let them fight back against those who challenge their rule. The objective of this book is to set free the lion and let Him defend Himself. Rather than cower at the thought of science and secularism, it’s time for Christians allow God and the Bible be tried against the evidence. For non-Christians, it’s time to give the thought of a real and rational God an honest chance. If God and the Bible are truly as powerful and real as they claim to be, they will stand tall when evaluated against the evidence; they will withstand and ultimately overcome when secularism wages war against them. It’s time that Christians and non-Christians realize that God is roaring in rebuttal to the claims of his obsolescence and inexistence. It’s time to unchain the lion.

About the Author
Caleb Eissler is a student at the University of Missouri-Columbia. He has been involved in youth and college ministry leadership for almost a decade. Eissler was an intern youth pastor for two years at Pleasant Valley Baptist Church, near Kansas City, Missouri. He has preached and taught apologetics classes at multiple churches.
