Sometimes, there are toys and gum on the little house for the person who died. I saw some gum in a bright green package and I just wanted one piece. I took one little bite, hardly even big enough to taste, and I saw Hilda come marching over. I don't even know how she saw me.
"Maria, you put that gum back RIGHT NOW. You're not supposed to touch anything on those graves." I don't know why. The dead person sure couldn't chew it and we hardly ever get gum. Oh well. I put it back. Hilda kept right on talking even though I was all done listening.
"You should never disturb those graces, even if it's different from what we do, because it shows respect. Wow. I guess I'll leave that gum alone from now on.

About the Book
Life was good until Mom and Dad told Maria they were going to move. What did they mean? This was home and always had been. Join Maria for her third grade year as she processes all the changes that life will hold for her in a new place.
About the Author
Maria was born and raised for the first nine years of her life in northwestern Ontario, where her father served as the principal of a residential school for students in grades one through nine. It was here that her love for reading, and later writing, was nurtured by both parents who read a wide variety of books to her. After her move to south central Kansas, her father’s career as an English teacher proved an invaluable resource as she began to write. Her blog, A Comedy of Heirs, is a whimsical look at her current role as a pastor’s wife and mother of five. This is her first book.
