The Marching People

Hebrews 11:30 – By faith the walls of Jericho fell, after the people had marched around them for seven days.
I moved a rock that weighs 200 pounds from an isolated Kansas field to my front yard in Indiana. A stone mason had chiseled:

I can hardly make out the year because the ravages of time have worn the last two digits.
My father took me on a genealogical ride to where my great grandparents had lived. On this adventure, we ended up in a poison ivy riddled field where he showed me the stone. W. H. was a relative of ours who was a stone mason and he had lived in a sod house lined with stones he had carved. The keystone above the doorway announced the abode of W. H. Gilstrap. It stood there proudly for future generations to see. That is, until a man decided to bulldoze the field and I salvaged the stone.
Memorials and memorabilia help us recall special events or people. These same types of mementos also serve to help us recall God’s presence and guidance in our lives. In this study of Joshua and the people who marched, we will see not one stone, but 12 stones that served as a reminder to the Israelites of one of God’s great miracles in bringing them into the Promised Land. These 12 stones were to stand as a memorial for future generations.
God was at work in the lives of the Israelites for over 400 years – in Egypt when they were slaves, in the desert, when they crossed the Jordan River, in the circumcision and Passover celebration, and in the conquest of Jericho. He also was working in the lives of the Amorites. He is at work in our lives today. What plans does He have for us? What does he want us to do, feel, or think? Are we recalling what God has done for us in the past? Are we keeping our memorial rock piles? Are we separated and pure for Him? For what is He gently preparing us as he did Joshua and the people? What is He asking us to do? What is our Jericho? Are we getting ready? Are we willing?

About the Book
What does it mean to walk with God? Enoch knew. In fact, he knew so well that one day he walked right into God’s eternal home without dying. Now that was a walk!
A life “walk” involves all the activities that intersect with our lives every day. If we walked like Enoch or like righteous Noah, what would those intersections of appointments, meetings, meals, sport games, telephone conversations, text messages, meetings with friends, and discussions with family members look like?
All those giants of faith listed in Hebrews 11 walked with God and are examples to us of walking in faith with God. Noah believed God would send a flood and built an ark even though he had never seen rain. Joshua and the Israelites, Deborah and Barak, Jephthah, and Gideon had faith for miraculous victories in battle. Rahab choose to leave her life of prostitution, married, and became part of the lineage of Christ. Samson asked for one last triumph of strength and fulfilled God’s plan for his life.
