Get up!...This is your life!
A capable, intelligent and virtuous woman, who is he who can find her?
Proverbs 31:10a
Isn’t that you? Doesn’t that describe your life right now? Of course I don’t know you, but you must be one of those women who are totally on top of her game, right? You meet all deadlines with ease, you go home at night and chase one or more children, pets, husbands, etc. around with overflowing joy and gladness while simultaneously cooking and cleaning for your ever appreciative army. Oh yes, I am sure! If you are anything like me, you have trouble most days finding your shoes, let alone this capable, intelligent and virtuous woman. Maybe this is why the next part of the verse asks, "Who is he who can find her?"
The good news is that God can find her, will find her, and has already found her – she is YOU! Each one of us is able to measure up to this standard by God’s grace and His grace alone. When reading through Proverbs 31, it is so easy to become overwhelmed by all the things this beautiful woman accomplished. According to her book, Woman After God's Own Heart, author Elizabeth George agrees that this woman was real flesh and blood. She was a mom who had the best interests at heart for her young son, Prince Lemuel:
"Perhaps it was because of his young age that his wise mother organizes this list of qualities according to the letters of the Hebrew alphabet. Taught this way the alphabet of character could be quickly learned, easily memorized, regularly recited and permanently etched onto the tablet of his young heart."
I’m sure this mom wasn’t always on top of her game either. Who knows where she was in life when God found her. What she was doing in that moment we will never know, but we do know that God used her to teach her son, and countless numbers of others for generations, what it’s like to be a beautiful woman of God.
God is funny like that. He "finds" ordinary people and allows them to do extraordinary things for His kingdom. Think about the famous Bible stories you know, people like Moses, Hannah, David, Esther, Mary, Peter, and Paul. How many other stories are hidden away like treasures inside His word? What about people like Rahab, Ezekiel, Gideon, or Mary Magdalene?
I don’t know where God has "found" you. I don’t know what your life is like, what your hopes and dreams are, or what struggles you may be going through. I do know that God has already found in you, in the midst of everything, a capable, intelligent, and virtuous woman.
