“Put your yellow boots on today,” the still, small voice said as I was getting dressed to go to work. I went into the kitchen to make my breakfast and then finished getting ready for work.
As I was brushing my teeth, I heard once again, “Wear your yellow boots.”
As I walked to my front door, I passed my living room and looked out the sliding-glass door. It looked overcast and gloomy. I put on my coat and totally forgot my yellow boots. Opening the door, I threw my bag over my shoulder and ran down the steps.
“Your yellow boots,” I heard again.
Oh, I’m running late. I’ll be okay, I thought.
As I reached the bottom stair, I stepped onto the sidewalk, and my feet flew out from under me. Ouch! I had tried to brace myself with my left hand as I fell. Sigh. I hadn’t listened! I’d forgotten to wear my yellow boots! Here I had been asking the Lord to be sure of His still, small voice. I wanted to know it. I really wanted to do what He said. And here I’d heard it all morning as I was getting ready for work. But I hadn’t obeyed. I hadn’t really paid attention. He’d been telling me to wear my yellow boots, and I’d just ignored His voice—His warning. He’d known how icy it was and wanted to protect me. My yellow boots were great. They gave me real surefootedness. They were safe to wear on ice and fun in snow. I just didn’t slide or fall with them at all.
What a lesson for me. I’d broken my wrist when I could have been safe. I hadn’t listened to the Holy Spirit prompting me.
