The Illusion of Sleep

time

As the sun settles in for the evening

I know the days grow shorter

One more sunrise

one more sunset

The world is growing older

I never saw the change occur

but, god knows that it's happened

when leaves of green

are leaves of brown

and the weather is uncertain

Little John is grandpa Evans

now my girlfriend is my wife

My children have become strangers

Funny how they call it life

The things I've done

I didn't have to

but I had no choice in the matter

An apology wont change things any

wont make them any better

See the field become the station

as power poles replace the trees

Mother earth is aging quickly

with a weak and feeble breeze

How many days have passed me by

to leave behind another

No one ever told me that

my fading mind was just a picture

left so I'd discover

what it was

and

what it is

that time must make us suffer

Youth will grow

and wish for age

as the grownups

turn the page

Youth will taste his age in time

compare it to some poets rhyme

Age will see it in dismay

remembering his bygone day

How they waste it he will think

as he takes another drink

One day they'll grow

too late to know

time is quick, that passes slow.
