A Heart Tension
From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has been forcefully advancing, and forceful men lay hold of it. Matthew 11:12 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart… Matthew 11:29
I see a tension in this chapter worthy of comment. Do you see it?
First, Jesus gives us the visual of what’s going on in the spirit realm. Since John has come upon the scene to prepare the way for Jesus, the kingdom of heaven is forcefully advancing, or is forcibly entered. Men lay hold of it by using force. They seize it for themselves. That sounds militant! Do I need to equip myself with army boots to advance in my relationship with the Lord here?
At chapter’s end, Jesus offers rest for the weary and burdened, and then gives us the only self description of His person stated in the gospels. Jesus says: I am meek and gentle and lowly, or humble, in heart. Is this a soft and mild Savior?
It may appear as an oxymoron. But I think not. To be meek is not to be weak. It is confidence and conviction displayed through humility. Forceful men advancing are people of courage, passion and unwavering faith. His kingdom’s rule is established within our heart- the seat of our person. We embrace His kingdom, not passively, but assertively and wholeheartedly.
Father God, Your yoke is easy and Your burden is light. You have freed me from my burdens. You have made my weary heart glad. Instill in me a tenacity to apprehend all that You have for me in a spirit of meekness. Amen.

Denny Stevens is the founding pastor of Living Hope Fellowship, a Foursquare church. He has been engaged in ministry since his graduation from Central Bible College in 1981. He had been a bivocational senior pastor for thirteen years prior to his retirement in 2013. Denny loves a good devotional and so chose to author one himself.
