So why am I even here, Lord? Stuck on the tenth floor of this hospital—stranded. No power. Generators starting to fail. The food is rationed; it goes to the patients first, then others. Thank God we have plenty of water.
I look out the window and see that the entire city is flooded. Kids are making their way onto the bridge to sit and wait—no parents, no food—just waiting to be rescued. Day in and day out they are crying, waiting.
The morgue under the hospital is flooded; the smell of death permeates the hallways. Forgive me, but I threw $500 worth of new textbooks into the trash; I won’t be back on campus anytime soon. If we can just make it home to Cali …
Thank you, Lord, for letting me charge my cell as soon as I got here. Not that I can call anyone; the towers are down. But at least I left a message for a friend to call my parents and tell them we had waded over to the hospital for safety.
Sad thing is I can’t even blame the storm. Katrina is a beautiful name. It’s this cheap city with these old, broken-down levees that’s the problem. Amen.

About the Author
Angel Knox has spent the past several years on a journey of faith, growth, and finding out what life is truly all about. Although wanting to write this story right after Hurricane Katrina happened, she realized there were more pieces to the puzzle; ten years later, this work is as it should be—complete. She believes that everyone has a special story, and by sharing and connecting with others, we can begin to heal and find peace and joy in our lives. Somewhat of a “spiritual” nomad, Angel hails from Folsom, California, but has spent her adult years in New Orleans, Louisiana; Charlotte, North Carolina; Charleston, South Carolina; and now in Sacramento, California. She is recently married, and she and her husband plan to continue writing and growing their family.
