Meg cautiously stood, keeping her eyes on the bear. Soaked in rain, mud and blood, she began moving in slow motion toward the tree. Encircling the bark with her arms, one boot lodged itself as the other followed. Like a wild horse her heart raced. CLIMB! The words lodged in her throat. A thunder on the ground speedily approached and Meg scrambled to remain out of grasp. She battled as much as her physical condition allowed. Terror clutched her inner strength. The black bears’ two-inch claws raked across the top of her boots in an attempt to rip her from the tree. Her nails felt the sensation of being torn out, as her cold fingers tried with extreme difficulty to grip the bark. Excruciating pain shot through her hands and with anger and fear surfacing she screamed, “LET GO! LET GO!”

The backdoor of O’Ryan’s Pub opened, and Jack slipped out into the blackened evening. Unrelenting fingers of the frozen night air wrapped themselves around his body while painful visions of Meg haunted him like razors slicing through his veins. Too many times he had been down this road.
Meg Greystone longed to leave the city of Beaverton, where all hope diminished. When she accepted a position with Mahto Ranger Station in northern Idaho, little did she realize the enormous challenges her new choice would bring. With a cold heart of stone, would she allow this journey to help her discover God’s grace, healing, and purpose?
About the Author
Cynthia worked as an Outdoor Recreation Supervisor. Every day sustained challenging situations while working with all ages in the back country. She enjoys hiking, backpacking and kayaking, canoeing, snowshoeing and cross country skiing.
Cynthia lives in Western Montana near the Canadian border with Glacier Park as her backyard. She has raised five children and enjoys eleven grandchildren. She embraces her walk with God and trusts on His promises.
