Prayer is more than a list, recited prayer, words of the mind, it is words and actions of the heart, it is prayer at work, it is what we feel through his presence. It is not a sentimental, gushy feeling, it is strength, a joy and a peace that only come through committed Christ centered prayer and that is what nurtures living prayer.
Doors and Gates
We are moved by his pulse to place our hand on the knob
To pull the door open
To come inside
To worship with our neighbors
To share fellowship one with another
To open the door of our heart
To feel his presence and love
To eat of his life giving nourishment
We sometimes pause at the gate
A little nervous to accept the gifts inside
Not quite open to walk his road of covenant and commitment
Not quite willing for a fresh watering of the dry areas in our hearts
Not quite sure about praying with open hands, soul and mind
Not quite trusting in his will for our lives
Not quite secure and struggling with doubt
But still his pulse places our hand on the knob and we enter
To dine with him receiving his life giving nourishment
That "still small voice" is an intense - passionate pulse

About the Book
Dawn Sweet offers us a guide to a life of living prayer. These writings are in both prose and poetry. She challenges us to create a life of prayer, not merely a prayer life. She believes one needs to ponder through prayer. Sweet also strongly encourages us to read prayers slowly, revisiting them until they are planted in our hearts.
In A Life of Living Prayer, she shares that scripture teaches us how to pray at all times. Jesus’ life was one of pure and constant prayer, through his parables, miracles, every step within and around the miles of his ministry, even his death and resurrection. He prayed for us to remember him, to continue to share his vision and mission, and Sweet explains that this is only accomplished through time alone with him. The title of this writing, the body of her work, and the epilogue all extend to us an invitation to live a life of prayer.
About the Author
While pastoring at an American Baptist church, Dawn A. Sweet felt compelled to work with people in a more intimate ministry. She became a facilitator of seminars and retreats focusing on prayer. Her education is in theology, biblical studies and church music. She has also done extensive study in contemplative literature, and has spent time experiencing the many ways prayer is perceived and utilized. She lives in Massachusetts, appreciates spending time in monastic communities, and enjoys the company of friends, classical music, and the beauty of nature.
