As the nurse answered the phone, I tried to hold my voice steady as the tears ran down my cheek. I was holding Faith close to me, rocking as I told her about my daughter’s lips turning blue. Before she could even get a word out, I asked if I should bring her in myself, or if they wanted to send an ambulance. The words coming out of my own mouth were sending shockwaves of fear through me. “Am I really having this conversation? She’s just so little and frail! Oh God, help me, protect my baby!”
It was then that the nurse asked a MOST inappropriate question, “Umm… Mrs. Knox, what is your daughter wearing?” Huh? Did she really just ask me to describe the adorable outfit I have my little angel in? This was serious, and I did not have time for such talk! I pushed past her rudeness and asked again if she wanted an ambulance sent out or if I should drive myself. Completely ignoring my question, she prodded again as to what Faith was wearing. Knowing how urgent the situation was, I answered her as quickly as possible so I could get back to the ambulance question. “She’s wearing a little onesie outfit.” In irritation, I refused to give her any more details on my daughter’s attire. My heart was racing and my body was going numb, but again I forced out the urgent question of what I needed to do. It was then that the nurse gave the final verdict, “Ma’am, your daughter’s probably just cold.” WHAT!!??? “It’s December and she needs to be wrapped in something warm and have a hat on her head. Her lips are turning blue because she’s cold.”
Although deeply relieved, I was so humiliated! I thanked the nurse for her medical advice and quickly got off the phone. I ran to Faith’s room and put her into footie pajamas (no time to cry at how cute she looked this time), wrapped her in three blankets, put a warm cap on her head and sat us both right by the fire! It didn’t take long for her lips to turn that soft baby pink again and her rosy cheeks to shine. But then another crisis for this new mom… I think I had overdone the heat and she was sweating profusely! Within minutes her little head was soaked, slicking down the little bit of hair that she had! I knew then, this mom thing was going to be a wild ride. How was I to keep this precious, trusting baby alive, safe and protected… if I couldn’t even monitor her temperature?!

About the Author
Patty Knox, the wife of Bob for forty-four years and Mother to Jason, Micah, Nathan and Alison, lives in Auburn Washington. She is currently the women’s pastor of United NW Church where her son Micah and his wife Jennifer pastor. Patty has been blessed with seventeen grandchildren, plus two more presently on the way. They are to numerous to name but none the less precious! She can also testify to the truth that a “Merry Heart” really does good like a medicine, and that a dose of laughter can be the spoon that administers it.
Margie McCready has been married to her husband, Mark, for 35 years. She is the mother of 5 daughters: identical twins Rachel & Melanie, Corinne, Heather and Hillary. Margie also has 11 amazing grandchildren. She’s a homebody and a “nester” who loves to tend to her flowers and wild birds. Her passion is reading.
Jennifer Knox has been married to her childhood sweetheart, Micah, for eighteen years. Together they have four children: Faith, Hope, Grace, and Justice. Jennifer keeps busy homeschooling her children and helping with the children’s ministry of their church, United NW. She’s had a passion for Jesus since she was very young, and loves having the opportunity to share that passion with others.
