Law of Excellence
Read Proverbs 17. Reflect on verse 27.
He that hath knowledge spareth his words: and a man of understanding is of an excellent spirit.
Growing up as an aspiring piano player and singer, I did not produce quality music in the beginning years. I practiced, and I practiced some more. I purposed to produce the best music possible. I pushed myself to apply knowledge and resources during each phase of my musical development. Some call it ambition. For me it was the desire to develop the gifts God had given me. Sometimes others see talents within us before we recognize them ourselves. Through the help and encouragement of others, we commit to pursue our passions. This is what I did, and as I did, I came upon enviable opportunities and resources, which have allowed me to travel and perform internationally. My only credit is that my effort to excel has offered God something to work with. Events I have observed have caused me to believe that excellence and mediocrity oppose each other. Average performance warrants stagnation, even termination, but excellence summons promotion. Daniel is an example. His persona resonated excellence. History records that “Daniel was preferred above the presidents and princes, because an excellent spirit was in him; and the king thought to set him over the whole realm.”1 Daniel was a Jew who was devoted to the only monotheistic religion in the known world at the time, and that caused challenges. He was taken captive into a pagan empire. Of course, he was not the only one, but sometimes company in difficult circumstances amplifies the suffering. Daniel recognized his giftings and focused on excelling. He applied the law of excellence. Without compromising his principles, he was promoted and stayed in a high position of influence through three transitions of royal power. His life testifies of a God who enabled Daniel to perform every task to the highest standard. Government officials may not have liked his faith, but they could not deny his results. Daniel applied the law of excellence of which St. Paul speaks: “And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ.”2 Let us continue to apply the law of excellence in our talents, work, and legacy. Anything less dishonors an excellent God.
Prayer Heavenly Father, Help me to apply the law of excellence to my giftings, my profession, my calling, and my faith. Help me to do everything as unto You. I want to serve You. From You I receive my reward.
