Singin’ in the Key of Free
When Did I Stop Skipping?
Timmy couldn’t dance and Timmy couldn’t sing.
“Okay, children,” Miss Marla would gladly announce, “now we get to sing!” It wasn’t enough
that we were to sing along with whatever she was leading; we also had to hold hands, kick our
legs, wave our arms, and hokie-pokie all together.
It was bittersweet for me, since I had Timmy the Frogboy on one side of me, but angelic Emily on the other. Timmy would squeal and squeak like a bad Kung Fu martial artist. Emily’s voice I couldn’t hear, but her smile made up the difference.
This had to be Timmy’s best part of the day, for he would exert all his energy, like trying to pull a bottle down through the Coke machine slot without paying. He was joyously oblivious to everyone around him; it really didn’t matter what he sounded or looked like, for he was living large! To say it was a joyful noise doesn’t suffice; horrible sound and sight better captures it.
When we finished all the racket and the gyrating, Timmy looked satisfied, like someone having finished a well-eaten dinner. I asked him one day, “What’s the deal with you and this
hokie-pokie commotion?”
“I really like it!” he said. It was that simple.
Unlike Timmy, some of the other kids could sing, some could dance, and some could even do both. Yet through the years, it amazes me how many cease doing either.
A Child Again
When did we stop singing and dancing? When did we outgrow skipping? Did we discover that others’ opinions of our “talents” snuffed out the songs and dances of our life? Did we just get overburdened by everything we’ve stuffed in our bags? Have the floors we walk on become
slippery from all our spilled lives? Have we become hoarse from all our screaming demands to
have our own way? Have we become crippled by the blows of betrayal when we try to live as God designed?
I pray that God reveals His love to you. May it cause you to become as a little child again, knowing how deeply He loves you, and how He dances wildly over you as you come into His
presence.
May you start skipping again in His presence...as you embrace the joy He has for you and your life.
