Cruze and I shot a last quick glance at each other as the announcer yelled; ON YOUR MARK! GET SET! POP! The gun went off.
I felt a huge lump swell up in my throat. As we took off pedaling down the hill; I could feel my bike and body shaking like a jack hammer. I was picking up speed as I approached the jumps. Think, Think, Think fast and stay low on the jumps, I repeated to myself. I kept hearing the words; just finish, just finish the race, without crashing! I managed to get one single thought in focus; look for an opportunity to attack and get a head of the group.
For a split second the words Al said popped in my head;
“It’s not about winning, but how we finish the race that matters.”
