I was in the hospital for about a week and during that time Kathy slept in a chair at night in her clothes, ate hospital cafeteria food and took leave from a job she dearly loved to be with me in the hospital. The sacrifice she made to make sure I received great care and was not alone was amazing. Talk about standing beside me, she was as close to being in my shoes as she could be. The difference was I had to; she chose to. One night when I woke up I began thinking to myself I wonder why Kathy is here. I have 24-hour care, a clean and safe place to rest and she has to be away from a job she dear-ly loves. When she came back from getting coffee that morning, she had a present for me. It was a plaque which simply said, “Together is my favorite place to be.” Tears came to my eyes and we em-braced in an extended hug. I knew she loved me, and I knew she supported me, and I knew she would spend time with me if I asked, now I knew she was devoted to me. I knew without a doubt that she would stand by me no matter the circumstances. I knew that when she had a choice, she would choose to be with me. The words for better or for worse echoed in my mind. Words we both said 46 years earlier were being modeled by the woman standing next to me and whenever I look at the plaque I am reminded of her commitment. The words inside the wedding ring she gave me “my love and my life” have a new meaning after each of our health scares.

About the Author
Brian Shelby grew up in Wyoming, Utah, and Southern California before settling in San Jose, California. He attended San Jose State University and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in physical science. He was a youth minister and worked at a specialty chemical company before finishing his career as a high school teacher/coach. His walk with Jesus has taught him lessons on marriage, parenting, business, teaching, and the future.
