“Please, Jakob, tell me when you’re leaving. Please!” I begged.
“I would if I could, but I’m under strict orders. I haven’t gotten the official notice yet of when I’m to leave. But when I do, I promise you this. Some way, somehow I will tell you,” he said.
September 2, 1944, a day I’ll NEVER forget!!
When I arrived at the post office, the night switchboard operator was asleep, again! Gently I shook her arm and she awoke.
“Oh Sarah Grace, I’m not really sure what this is all about, but there is a lavender orchid on the switchboard desk,” she said. Then she left.
I knew exactly what that was all about! Rushing to the switchboard, I spotted just about the prettiest thing I’ve ever seen! It had a lavender ribbon tied around it. There was no note, no nothing. Just the orchid and the ribbon. I got a funny feeling in my stomach, my head started to spin, and the next thing I remember was waking up and seeing Daddy and Dr. Brubaker standing over me. This all felt like a nightmare.
“Daddy, is Jakob really gone?” I asked softly. He nodded.
“Oh Daddy!” I cried.

About the Book
Growing up, I was told never to ask my Dad about his time overseas in World War II. After his passing in July 2003, my mother came across an old shoe box that had been pushed to the back of his closet. Upon opening the box, she found over one hundred letters he had written to her while stationed in Europe.
After reading a few letters it became quite clear why he never wanted to talk about the war. Although censored, these letters spoke of his love for my Mother, his belief in God and his wanting to come home. Particularly difficult to read is his account of where he was and what he did as a soldier in Europe.
About the Author
Krista Jakubik was born and raised in Hummelstown, Pennsylvania. She is a teacher and mother of three grown children, and just became a grandma for the first time. After reading her father’s love letters sent to her mother during World War II, Krista felt compelled to share them.
