Once upon a time, long ago, there was a man whose name was Jonah. Jonah lived in the land of Israel. Jonah and the people of Israel believed in God, and they worshipped him. That means that they knew who God was, and they honored him as they should.
In that same time, some distance away, in a land called Assyria, there was a city called Nineveh. Nineveh was a very large city, and many people lived there. But unlike the people of Israel, the people of Nineveh did not believe in God or worship him. Because they didn’t know God, they did many evil things. Nineveh was not a very nice place.
Jonah didn’t care much for Nineveh, which made it all very interesting when one day God gave him a special message. He told Jonah that he had seen the wickedness of the people, and that he wanted him to go there and warn them about their evil ways.
Now Jonah didn’t want to do this at all. He didn't like the people of Nineveh, he didn’t care about them, and he certainly didn't want to go there. So Jonah did a very silly thing. He tried to run away. He tried to run away from God, and from what he was told to do.
