The huge door opened easily. She slipped into the darkness and was covered by the silence within the barn. Allowing her eyes to adjust, she carefully made her way into the heart of the barn. She could see the dimly lit office on her right. His office was an old stall. She could smell the fresh grain and the sweet scent of the crushed hay beneath her feet. She was thankful to have come so far without being discovered. The only light she could see was the low glow from the small stove. She could barely make out the shapes in front of her. She could feel the sacks of stacked grain. And then she saw Bo. Naomi was right, he did hold fast to the old traditions even if no one else did, even if no one else cared, even if no one else believed in them, but he did. A tingle of gratitude came over her. "He was a man of character, even when no one else was looking." She loved him for that. He was a man of character and character counts especially when no one else is looking.

A native of New Jersey, Sharon Hagen acquired her master’s degree from Rutgers University. Today she lives in northern Virginia, where she raised her four children.
