Introduction I don’t know about you, but I truly distaste pain of any type. I especially do not like heart pain. I’m not referencing the kind of heart pain associated with a triple bypass, but the pain that comes from life not being right at the inner most of our being. None of us can escape the “sufferings of this present time.” You may have a broken heart today over a wrecked relationship. You may be filled with grief over a loved one who died. You may be depressed and lonely and living in a place where no one seems to know you or care about you. You may be sick with sorrow over a son or daughter who made the wrong choices in life. You may be dealing with the pain of cancer or bearing the effects of treatment. You may be afraid because you may lose your job today. Your life may be in danger because you dared to share your faith in a place that hates the name of Jesus Christ. Whether the suffering is spiritual, emotional or physical, it is taking place “in” you. The yawning aching that comes with wounded relationships and the sense of weakness that comes from a broken heart was rough for me to deal with. The pain I experienced could be described as a constant bruise that lingered under the surface of life until a sharpen reminder that awakened the brokenness that dwelled in the potholes of my heart just to say, “Hello I’m still here”. Maybe you too know this kind of pain. Perhaps you are in the midst of a broken heart today. Maybe the cause is from a wayward child, a friendship gone bad, or failed career which have left you feeling alone and worthless. Whatever the cause, you understand the feeling that something just doesn’t make sense about the condition of your heart and there are reminders everywhere that this is not the way it’s supposed to be. Most all of us know this hunger deep inside to be a longing for our hearts to be whole; the way we were meant to be. And every once in a while we get to taste what wholeness might be; we’ll come across a line in a book, hear a song on the radio or a scene in a movie that reaches in and remind us, “This is it. This is what life is supposed to be like!” Throughout this book you will see I dealt with my pain in multiple ways. I tried to keep busy, move on and repair my hidden flaws; but, none of these things worked. It was when I truly got the revelation of “who I am to God and who God is to me” I started the journey of having a renewed heart.

Even in those moments of wanting to give up, God would allow me to reflect on the day I stood in the pulpit on 119th and Halsted in Chicago and tell myself, “I’m determined to be somebody someday.”
In this book, you will see my hurt, my pain, my setbacks. But most of all, you will see the faithfulness, mercy, grace, and the love of God.
Allow this book to be the process to start your journey to a “Renewed Heart” only Jesus can do for you.
