FROM THE HOUSE BY THE SEASHORE
Did you ever look back at your life and say to yourself, how did I get here and I sure wish I had made better choices in my life. Yes, I said all those things too!
The house that I grew up in was small, but I had my own bedroom. It had 2 huge walnut trees in front, which my Dad would proudly hang the American Flag from. Dad worked, my mom stayed home to take care of us 3 kids.
When I was a little girl, life seemed easier, fun at the beach, rides on the merry-go-round at Savin Rock, rides to Cape Cod, picking up seashells and putting them into our sand buckets. But in my grammar school years and high school years, things got very challenging. Yeah, I had some good friends and I always knew who they were, because they never put me down or made fun of me. After high school, I did what normal people do, I got married, had a family, but different times in my life, I felt I still needed to please people or the feeling of rejection was just around the corner. After a time of separation from my husband, I thought the wounds were healing, but not so…
Getting on a Harley, drinking, taking drugs, and just trying to cheat death every time. Doing things I did not want to do, but did them anyway, just to belong. I had rejection a lot in life and did not want it anymore. I think the biggest hurt in my life, was rejecting and throwing away my own children, 3 of them. Just to hold onto to someone that I felt if I did not do this, he would leave me. It seemed to me, I was the one who was knocking and trying to earn the respect of people, but I was looking in the wrong places.
Now I am going to do want I want to do, bad, good or indifferent, I am going to just do it! Does this sound like anyone of you? Some of my choices were painful for others and it started to take a toll on my life as well. Getting to the point of no return, I would think of ways of ending my life, but the more I thought about it, something was trying to tell me to keep my life. I was walking down some very dark roads, with no end in sight. Did I ever think that someone would reach down and pull me out of the muck and mire that I was in? Well it did happen and it is a name that people love, some people hate, some people don’t think He exists, but with 7 words it happened!

Did you ever think that someone you trusted would change your life? High school had opened my eyes to a world of self-indulgent drinking and drug use. After graduation, working my way to nowhere, I got married, had children, and wanted desperately to lead a normal life. But I was living a lie. I had no idea what was happening to me. I felt like there were days I was losing my mind, but why? I wanted to be a good wife and mother, but my self-centeredness was shutting them out. It was my time all the time. That world became my life and my family was being left out. I was slowly slipping away, and my life’s ship was sinking fast. Then I found someone that loved me just the way I was and always forgave me; someone I needed my whole life and finally He was here. He changed my heart and my way of thinking. So as you read through each page, you may see your life mirroring mine, and you just might find what you are looking for!
About the Author
Pati Adams is an author, speaker, and former executive, center, and client service director for crisis pregnancy centers. She has facilitated several post-abortion recovery classes over the course of her fifteen year career. Pati has been on both local and national radio and television. Her story was told on Unshackled, which aired in January of 2006. When not speaking, working, or writing, her time is spent walking, riding their Harley or visiting with her family and twelve grandchildren. Pati currently resides in Colorado with her husband, Geoff, of forty-two years.
