Silent Prayer
Abnormal
This mask I wear to carry on because my inner secrets are just too deep.
The secrets in which lie in my femininity that I should have tucked away with lock and key—chastity belt and close to my heart
It’s kind of hard to find a start,
It could have been anyone of you.
Before I was untouched and so pure, but now my life is full of-
Lies.
Deceit.
False truths, is the mask I wear everyday among despair.
I sit and I think why did this happen to me?
But I still can’t seem to see… I thought I was loved from the almighty above and He will always see me through
Help me out and keep me out of harms’ way
But I guess I was wrong.
Because I am now really singing a song of sorrow
Whose melodies aren’t intriguing
For this song I am singing,
Abnormal
In which it is I can’t help but thinking ‘why he did’
Oh God forbid me to be hurt any longer
And allow me to have pleasant slumbers.
Not walk around with the mask I wear.
I ask that you let it go away never to return another day
Just when I thought my pain was over-
the rock flipped over
my tables got turned
and my feelings twisted.
All I wish is to dismiss it.
Bear with me in this burden I share only with you and those who are true to me.
I ask that you be with me in all my prayers
Stay close to my heart.
I ask that you please help me to realize this is true and really nothing that I can do.
But most importantly I ask that you remove this wicked spell cast upon me
From the deepest of the deep,
The lowest of the low
In order for my soul to grow through,
Silent prayers.
Invisible Woman
Invisible woman Can you see me? I know I have a voice and a choice
I choose to make,
I speak loud and clear though you are near
You act as if you do not hear me.
Invisible woman,
You touch my child as I stand with him in hand.
You pick up my daughter now really seeming out of order,
Invisible woman can you see me…
Acknowledge my husband brother in law too,
Invisible woman
Your mother even asks “How are you?”
I smile and say “How do you do?”
Invisible woman
I am not see, I am the blacker the berry
The sweeter the juice.
I am the one with his children not you.
He may have been that childhood crush
Made you blush
Invisible woman.
I am not invisible see…
You acknowledge my son, he is but a piece of me
You play with my daughter, she is but my spitting image
From the beautiful smile on her face
To the embrace you have received
See I am raising her to be that person.
Invisible woman
I am not invisible see…
That man you speak to he belongs to me
We are one in the same,
Connected not only by rings.
Invisible woman
It is a mental, spiritual, physical thing.
Invisible woman you see
I am not invisible
For all those things you touch are me
Invisible woman…
Jungle Gym
Look at it….there it is, the jungle gym.
Every kids’ goal is to master the Jungle Gym.
It looks sturdy enough
The legs seem to brace very well and if they can hold Daddy they can hold me…
Take a step forward, I am a bit closer it’s just in my reach.
Mom lets out a slight heed of warning to me…I look back, smile and step closer
The arm is just in reach.
I bet it will be cold, no oddly warm to me.
They push Daddy up not letting him fall
Now I know I can truly do it all!
On your mark-get set-here I go. Brace yourself I’m diving in
My head hits his back, my feet mount his calves and I begin to climb.
I reached the top and hold on tight
I don’t want to fall that will be a sight.
I reach for an arm- look, I can dangle and even swing,/p>.
Those arms hold me up by the same means, by God’s grace it can only be—
‘Mommy look at me’ she turns and smile
As I hang on my Jungle Gym this may last a while.
Jungle gym…my fears are gone
Stay sturdy because I’m coming strong
Good night, I’ll see you tomorrow.

About the Book
The author heads down a road less traveled and captures her many roles and life experiences by way of poetry. She invites readers to venture into her multifaceted life, sharing her journey as a daughter, sister, confidant, veteran, wife, mother, and Christian by expressing the raw emotions of her encounters and inner thoughts. She paints a picture of her inner most feelings as a teenage girl making decisions that were sometimes seemingly unforgivable, especially to her. The author goes on to captivate the audience by sharing her challenges of self and societal doubt, “people pleasing,” fear of the unknown, growing pains, and finally her evolving relationship with God. She shares her journey through poetic expressions and invites you to witness and share in her spiritual, mental, emotional, and physical growth in motion.
About the Author
Twanita Lassiter is a native of Virginia and currently resides in Washington D.C. She is a U.S. Army veteran where she actively served her country and received two Army Achievement Medals. She is an Army wife, a mother of two, and a beloved daughter, family member, and friend. Twanita has also authored “A Cup of Coffee”, a poetry piece published in “The Colors of Life” book by the International Library of Poetry. Her many other accomplishments include a Bachelor of Arts in Pre-Law and a minor in Psychology, from Catawba College; a paralegal certificate from the Paralegal Institute of Washington; and a graduate degree from DeVry Keller Graduate School of Management with a Masters in Accounting Financial Management with a concentration in Certified Fraud Examination. She currently works as a defense contractor in the fields of program and finance analysis.
Twanita uses the experiences of growing up in an urban environment and its challenges, her natural competitive spirit and her lifetime calling to be a leader as the influence for her poetry. Her “POETREE” has many roots and she seeks to reach adolescent, teenage, and young women with the stories that she creates with her eloquent words.
