The Promise in Apartment 2A is a personal testimony on how I journeyed from an unbeliever to a believer through God’s grace and mercy. As you read my testimony, know that God looks beyond the surface, beyond the mistake you have made, beyond what somebody said about you and He sees your incredible value and potential. This book is filled with personal stories on how the promise was in apartment 2A followed by encouraging and hopeful messages. The messages I touch on will give people hope and inform them you can make mistakes and still rise from the ashes.
It was President’s Day and I was on my way to get my tax returns prepared. My tax preparer and I were having a conversation about what transpired in our lives the prior year. She proceeded to tell me her encounters and we both faced several adversities throughout the year. When she finished preparing my taxes, she gave me my folder with all my documents and took my hand and said “after hearing all of it you need to write a book.”
The next day, I went to my employment and I was three weeks short of celebrating 30 years with the Company. At this point in my life, I recommitted my life to the Lord and was studying obedience. I took a break from my desk and went to the kitchen to buy a snack from the vending machine. I ran into a long time co-worker in the hallway and we talked for a bit. After we had a conversation she said, “Geez girl you need to write a book.” As I walked back to my workstation, I heard the Lord say “when one door closes another one will open.” Five minutes after hearing His voice, I found myself sitting in a conference room in the Human Resources department listening to someone tell me my job was being eliminated. Upon hearing this, I felt a sense of peace, calmness and warmth come inside of me.
When I said my final goodbyes, I walked out of the building and started walking to the train. The Lord stopped me on the boardwalk, had me look across the river and said “now tell your story.” While standing there, I took a few minutes and prayed for those back at the office. I surrendered them over to God and asked they be forgiven. On my four hour commute home, I had time to reflect and I knew God needed me to share what He had done in my life.
In obedience, I have obeyed His calling and the next day I took out a pad and pen and confined myself in my one bedroom apartment and starting writing. I share with you what I have learned on my journey and know you can do the right thing even when it is hard. I hope you can grasp how the favor of God can come your way in spite of your past, in spite of your problems, in spite of your pain, and in spite of your position.
I believe the events I encountered can show you how God can cause you to triumph over difficulty but quite possibly shift you for your greatest moment if you allow Him into your life. When you allow Him in, He will turn your mess into a message. God is always there for us in spite of our doubts, fears, and wonderings. He is there every bit as much in our valleys as He is on our mountain tops. It is my hope that you will nurture some empathy and see how I wrestled with God and how I struggled to walk a godly life. As empathetic individuals, it is my aspiration that you can comprehend what God has done for us on the Cross and despite what we are going through, God will make a way.
I pray your eyes will be open to the characteristics of an abuser. As you flip the pages, may you capture a delicate moment in your hearts that changed my perception of motherhood as I struggled with depression. What others have sabotaged, God can rebuild. I hope you will see things in your own life you desire to change, and God’s Word will do its work in you if you let Him into your life. As you encounter difficulty and tragedy, God uses adversity for our advantage. He is right there offering His shelter of peace to your troubled hearts. He has a plan to restore, renew and revive your soul. As John 10:10 says, “The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life.”
May the biblical principles I mention bring you to a crossroads where you can apply them and begin to renew your spirit. At the same time, I believe my perseverance will be a great source of encouragement to those who are going through challenges today. I believe God gives us a divine purpose so that there will be a message in it to empower His people. My prayer is that many will embrace my memoir and be touched in a way that they will seek out and find the one true God, Jesus Christ. The only way to redemption is through Jesus, the son of God and His promises are for whosoever will. As you walk through the pages, you will find three sides to every story…. mine, yours and God’s truth.
