This incident was an emotional earthquake. It didn't destroy Steve and Cindy's relationship. But in the same way that ominous cracks appear in a structure after an earthquake, this incident put a major fissure in their marriage. An earthquake doesn't make a building immediately uninhabitable, but it weakens it. A later seismic shock can bring the building down, unless major retrofitting has been done. For Steve and Cindy's marriage there were no immediate retrofitting efforts.
