“Benjamin Arthur Blake!” Benny’s mother called out. “This is the third time I’ve called you. It’s time to get up for school. Hurry so you won’t be late.”
Benny knew he’d better listen when she called him by his full name, but he still didn’t move. This time, to be sure he heard her she had gone clear upstairs to his bedroom door. His little dog Shag, with his paws up on the bed and tail wagging, was also anxious for his playmate to get up and pay attention to him. On school mornings it was almost impossible to get Benny out of bed. However, it wasn’t this way on Saturday mornings. No one had to call him on Saturday because he was always up early, dressed, and ready to do all kinds of fun things before anyone else was up.
“Aw, Mom,” Benny replied with his eyes half open as he gave out a big yawn. “Do I have to go to school?” he grumbled. “I don’t like school. It’s hard and it’s boring. Besides, it takes up time I could be doing things I really want to do.”
“Isn’t there anything you like about school?” asked his mother.
The hurt look on her face made him feel bad for snapping at her, and he quickly apologized.
“What am I going to do with you, Benny?” asked his mother.

About the Book
What’s in an Acorn? is a fictional story of Benny Blake, a boy who has a poor attitude toward school, and as a result he either wastes his time or causes trouble. He hasn’t yet learned that the things that are expected of him are for his own benefit. He finally causes himself a problem that a wise teacher turns around in an unexpected way.
About the Author
Margaret Eirp Bartlett, mother, grandmother, and former volunteer in the Foster Grandparent Program, lives in Cedar Rapids, IA. Life experience and working with children taught her the importance of every child knowing he or she has great worth. Retired from home health care, she enjoys writing stories that encourage children.
