God with us,
The insatiable, human appetite for autonomy blurs my blinding vision. It labors tirelessly to misguide my meandering heart and misinform my weakened will. It pole vaults me into ongoing confrontation between the mighty legions of independence and the ruling authority of submission's Master. It is as though a tug of war is my Soul's inherent drama, wanting to simultaneously accept and reject what is false, what is True. It is the internal, nagging conflict within my soul that catapults me into the lingering spirits and and the countless footsteps of the Ancients on pilgrimage to Your holy city, that glorious Tabernacle of Your sacred sanctuary. Like the people of ancient Israel, among whom You dwelt in the majestic Temple of Jerusalem, so too my Soul ever pines for You.
It is You who draw me to this Wellspring of unrelenting hunger, instilling just enough of souled appetite to ever increase my want of the Holy, driving me to What is just beyond my willing grasp. It is You who unearth in me this venerable and lofty desire to share life in You, regardless the cost. You awaken the taste buds of my Soul with Your suspenseful sweetness and fill my empty head with thoughts for only You. You dispel any previous presumption that my intellect could unleash me into Your invading presence. In Your will for love, You choose and call me into the mysterious Union of Your own making, fashioning my unfolding, ministering vocation of attending to You before all else.
The prisoner of Your captivation, my Soul embraces the unyielding embrace of Your desire, our hearts moored in Mercy's benevolent Illumination. Together, we are home to our belonging, the prayer of the Redeemer realizing its ultimate atonement. In our holding, we are released. It our seeking, we are sought. In our dying, we live in the forever of Now. Blessed are we, O gracious Lover in my Soul.

About the Author
G. Alton Adams is a Maine native, originally from Aroostook County. After earning a BA from Ricker College in Houlton, Maine, Alton later attended St. Mary’s Seminary and University in Baltimore, Maryland. Following his seminary education, he attended Antioch New England Graduate School, earning an MA in counseling psychology. As a licensed psychotherapist, Alton worked with abused children and family therapy. A former retreat director, Alton has provided retreats on prayer and taught courses on the spirituality of Theresa of Avila and John of the Cross. Alton and his wife, Dawn, make their home in Arundel, Maine.
