Swap, flick, swoosh, swap, flick, swoosh.”
The Double Dutch rope hit the ground with cracking and whipping as the girls in the neighborhood jumped double-dutch after school.
“1, 2, buckle my shoe, 3, 4, shut the door,” cheered the girls as they jumped.
“Boy, playing Double Dutch is better than chewing bubblegum!” hollered Hannah Humble from above the cheers of her friends.
“You bet!” shouted Penny Pride.
Penny Pride loved to jump Double Dutch. She was the best Double Dutch jumper on her side of town.
Penny added sparkle and shine to the sport. She could turn, twist, touch the ground and spin around when she jumped. Everyone, adults and children alike, enjoyed watching Penny when she jumped. It was only when Penny began to brag about how good she was that her friends would get upset and she had to jump rope by herself.
One day as Penny was gloating over her jumping record, Hannah Humble asked a question.
“Penny, why do you act so proud of how well you jump Double Dutch?”
“What do you mean by that Hannah?” grunted Penny.
“Penny, don’t you see? Every time you jump the highest or jump the longest you shout, “Penny Pride the best you can see, Penny Pride that’s me!”
“What’s wrong with telling the world that I am the best double-dutch jumper on this side of town?” Penny snapped.

Holly Golden is an educator of twelve years. She holds a B.S. in Psychology from Southeastern University of the Assemblies of God in Lakeland, FL. She resides in Florida where she lives with her dog, Autumn and cat, Happy.
Natasha Nelson is a native of Spokane, Washington. She currently resides in Orlando, Florida. This is her first time working as an illustrator. She is excited for young readers to get to know Penny Pride. Natasha’s hobbies include drawing, singing and cooking.
