Soul
In the land of Soul the light is warm,
the darkness cool with brilliance.
The soil is fertile, yielding fruits,
and flowers of radiant beauty.
Peace reigns o're and echoes love
from mount to deepest valley.
Truth and wisdom are pregnant seeds,
instilled in all men's minds.
Clouds are formed as face of God,
He guards our fragile hearts.
The shelter sought on earthly planes
is found within His realm.
Time is spent to beautify
the worlds which He created.
With the Master of Creativity,
I do dwell in Soul.
Journey Within
Spiraling downward into pitch black hell,
spiraling downward, rapidly I fell.
Ghost who haunt ghost doth inhabit such land,
darkness unmatched harbor beast that eat man.
Grotesque and bizarre, perception supreme,
distinguishes clear this land from a dream.
If this is life I am praying for death,
if life after death, struggling for breath.
Limitless boundaries, infinitive plight,
I must escape from these horrible sights.
Spiraling downward and inward for more,
spiraling downward there must be a core.
Uniformed skeletons, soldiers of wars,
aggressively charging, inflicting sores.
Rivers of blood flowing richly through towns
where Kings with their Queens drank greedily down.
Gathered together, the vultures and hawks,
preying profusely on forms that would talk.
So fear with its torture o're this land reign,
piercing the mucus protecting the brain.
Spiraling downward into pitch black hell,
spiraling downward, rapidly I fell.

About the Book
Through the questioning of life and our existence here, through the dark loneliness of depression and contemplation of suicide, through love realized and actualized, and love lost, From Midnight till Dawn is the journey of one man’s struggle through the dark, troubled times of this world until he enters into the kingdom of God’s eternal light. This collection is at times surreal, at other times sublime—sometimes prophetic, but always with a realistic perspective that speaks to individual trials, political situations, and the conscious of humanity.
About the Author
Tom Reed has been writing poetry over the span of four decades. Philosophical, political, poignant, or romantic, his poems run the gamut of life—whether about political history, like the “Dirge,” with hidden innuendos about John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King Jr., Richard Nixon, Mother Teresa, and Bosnia; or romantic poems like “Mortals Cry,” or “The Last Poem.” Also found are prophetic nuggets like “Journey Within,” “Obliteration,” and “Jerusalem.”
His early struggle with suicidal thoughts can be seen in the poems “Trial,” “Changes,” and “Thoughts on the Night of 10-19-76.” But his triumph over the menacing darkness can be seen in “The Answer.”
His broad range of thirty-three different vocations—including host of a Miami Beach restaurant, sound man and roadie, construction laborer, youth pastor, tree trimmer in New Orleans, and a variety of others—has helped to collectively paint this collage of life experiences called From Midnight till Dawn.
