Without knowing it consciously, Glenda prepared a massive fabrication to prove everything was alright. Beautifully painted and framed landscapes encouraged guests to stay and enjoy the epicenter of her home. Tranquility poemed itself in restful creams and tawny beige. Glenda came around the breakfast bar and sat down. She slid her feet out of her wedge-heeled sandals and rested them on the rounded stool brace.
Loren carried himself with well-practiced confidence. He was tall, lean, and could have been from his demeanor a gambler instead of a lawyer. You could only read from him what he wanted you to see. Maybe it was his profession or maybe not. Yet his sea green eyes held an unusual kindness for someone who defended the lawless and the innocent alike.
Loren sat his coffee cup on the counter. His eyes followed it down to the marble top and on down to her bare feet. She was curling her toe against the cross bar and massaging the balls of her feet on the smooth wood. Her toenails were deep pink, yet her fingernails were very natural. He slowly raised his eyes. Just taking in the facts. That was all.

Mettie Merryman and her husband, Larry, live in Salem, Oregon, in the beautiful Willamette Valley. They have four grown children and are foster parents to teenage boys.
