“Wake up! We’re going to talk about this! I want to know everything that was said.” I knew John hadn’t been in bed long. It was early Sunday morning, August 2, 1998. I assumed that he had just gotten in from his dad’s house, having spent all night discussing “things” with him—Church things, and not the faith-promoting kind. What I didn’t know yet was that he had actually been home for hours, on our computer, and that the conversation we were about to have was part of a series of events that would change my life forever...

I looked over at Cindy lying in the bed asleep. How was I going to tell her? How could I possibly convince her to ever listen or look? I knew what the Church taught. She would have to divorce me and marry a worthy Mormon priesthood holder. I could lose my family over this. There I was, knowing what I now knew, with her lying in bed not far from where I was sitting. I was somehow going to have to show her the things I had found. I was scared.
I knelt down beside our bed where she was sleeping and prayed a prayer I will never forget. The leaders had lied to us. I needed His help to somehow convince her it was a lie, to please show her the truth that He had shown me. I was afraid I was going to lose my family. Mormonism was our complete world. Everything in our lives revolved around the Church—how we dressed, the pictures on our walls, even down to the type of sodas I usually bought for us. It was the very center of our conversations and the songs she sang around the house and with our kids every night. I knew what it meant to her.
With a heavy heart, I got up off my knees and crawled into bed, completely bewildered, and tried to get some sleep before I talked to her about what was going to change our lives forever---one way or another.”…

My head was spinning. I had so many questions, so much to take in. Could this really be happening? Had we been lied to? If so, who else knows about this? Do the prophet, apostles, and all the other general authorities know? Even though I couldn’t deny what we had seen, I was still not ready to believe it was ALL a lie. I would need a lot more convincing than this….

We decided not to say anything to the kids just yet. Frankly we didn’t understand it all ourselves. One thing was for sure, however. God was at the helm, leading us along, and setting us free. Free from what and free to go where exactly had yet to be discovered. He wasn’t finished; there was more, so much more, that He was going to show us…

We had no idea where we would go from there or what would happen next. Whatever it was, we were already claiming the promise in John 8:32, “…ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” And did that journey to truth ever have quite a few surprises in store!

Ecclesiastes 3 tells us that there’s a time for every purpose under heaven, and His purpose and plan for our lives is rarely the same as what we planned or expected. The question is, do we trust Him enough to open the door and discover what He has waiting for us on the other side?

Cindy Prince is a former history and science teacher who decided to lay down her textbooks to become a Christian author and speaker with a passion for sharing God’s message of grace. She was a devoted Mormon for more than twenty years and has been a born-again Christian for the past fifteen years. She and her husband, John, are native East Texans and have been blessed with five amazing children.
